The trip experience compared
Both boats sail upstream from the dock at the base of the Niagara Gorge. They follow the same route: past the American Falls, past the Bridal Veil Falls, then into the basin of the Horseshoe Falls, where they hold position 4 to 6 minutes for photos before returning. The view, the spray, the sound, the experience are essentially identical.
Best Hornblower combo with Journey Behind the Falls.
Check availability →The differences that matter
1. Time at dock
The Hornblower has an indoor preboarding area, useful in spring and fall when waiting outside is uncomfortable. The Maid of the Mist boards directly from the outdoor queue.
2. Boat size
Hornblower boats are slightly larger (700 vs 600 capacity). On full boats, you have more standing room on the upper deck. On smaller crowds the difference is invisible.
3. Sustainability
The Maid of the Mist boats are all electric since 2020, the Hornblower boats are hybrid diesel-electric. Both have low emissions but the Maid is fully zero emission at the boat itself.
4. Skip the line products
Hornblower has a clear skip the line ticket (CAD 50). Maid of the Mist sells skip the line via the Niagara USA Discovery Pass (USD 46) which also covers other attractions.
Skip the line on the first Hornblower of the day.
Check availability →If you can do both: how to plan

Check availability →If you have a passport and a full day, do both. The view from each side at dock level differs slightly, you appreciate the symmetry. Most "both sides" tours include only one boat ride to save time, the few that include both run 10 to 12 hours total.
Verdict
Take the boat from whichever side you are on. The trip is essentially identical. If you have time and a passport, do both, but plan for a long day. The Hornblower combo with Journey Behind the Falls (CAD 107) is the single best value boat experience at Niagara.
