What to know before you book

Most tours include all tasting fees, transport in a small van and a charcuterie board or lunch. Tipping the driver is customary at 15 percent. The drinking age in Ontario is 19. The legal limit for blood alcohol is 0.05 percent, so even with a designated driver tour, hold off on driving for the rest of the day.

Most tours visit three to four wineries on a half day and four to six on a full day. Each stop includes a flight of three to five wines plus the tasting fee.

Half day group tours start at $97 USD per person. Full day tours with lunch range $135 to $245. Private tours start at $224 per group of two.

Ice wine grapes are pressed when temperatures stay below minus 8 Celsius for several hours. The harvest happens between mid December and late February. February is the peak month for ice wine festivals.

Most tours include a driver so you do not need to drive. If you are renting a car, the driver should not taste, full stop. Spit buckets are not common in Niagara tasting rooms.
